Problems with Strings

I am accessing IRIS databases with JDBC (or ODBC) using Python. I want to fetch the data into a pandas dataframe to manipulate the data and create charts from it. I ran into a problem with string handling while using JDBC. This post is to help if anyone else has the same issues. Or, if there is an easier way to solve this, let me know in the comments!

I am using OSX, so I am unsure how unique my problem is. I am using Jupyter Notebooks, although the code would generally be the same if you used any other Python program or framework.

I just restarted an AWS instance that have been dormant for 6 months (license still valid) only to find that the web application on there doesn't work and that I cannot connect to the management portal. I can however connect to the web gateway fine but it reports the "Server is currently unavailable".

Grateful any for any advice.

So i want to use the INSERT OR UPDATE command so i can update a COUNTER for a given name:

INSERT OR UPDATE myTable
SET name='Omer', counter = counter + 1;

as you can see with the above code - if the row is non-existent then we get an error because COUNTER is NULL!
I tried the following to fix this but all have failed:

We have released IPM 0.9.0. I previously remarked on some of the history and reasoning here; to summarize, this is a big release for two reasons: it represents a long-overdue reunification of our internal and community-driven work around IRIS-centric ObjectScript package management, and it has some backwards incompatibilities.
