In this article, I will outline and illustrate the process of implementing ObjectScript within embedded Python. This discussion will also reference other articles related to embedded Python, as well as address questions that have been beneficial to my learning journey.

As you may know, the integration of Python features within IRIS has been possible for quite some time. This article will focus on how to seamlessly incorporate ObjectScript with embedded Python.

Sometimes when we develop a mockup or PoC there is a need for a simple interface that will provide data in IRIS in JSON against SQL queries.

And recently I contributed a simple module that does exactly that:

accepts SQL string and returns the JSON.

How to install? Just call:

zpm "install sql-rest"

If you install it in a namespace X it will setup a /sql endpoint to your system that will accept POST requests with SQL string and will return the result for you for the data available in the namespace X.

I'm asking this best-practices question on behalf of a customer.

They have a Caché-based application, and an Ensemble production deployed in front as an ESB to provide web service API access to the back end application. They're looking for a best practice approach for the scenario where the Caché back end is calling a third-party web service. Should that go through Ensemble too? It's sort of a philosophical design question/debate.

I have an IRIS installation that is using 8-bit charset encoding (set to deu8 / Latin 1). I would like to convert everything (database and system) to Unicode

Charset encoding is something asked during installation, is it possible to change this on the fly ? The installer clearly say that Unicode systems cannot be converted. What about 8 bit ?

Same for database : is there possible conversion ?

Imagine enabling your application to read text to your customer? This is now possible with the new IRIS feature, Embedded Python. With this new functionality IRIS can natively run any open source or commercial Python libraries natively. gTTS (https://pypi.org/project/gTTS/) is a free library that transforms text into audio using the Google Translate service.

The attached code package provides a simple implementation of a web service client that utilizes the USPS Shipping API to normalize an address.

This code requires the developer to obtain a USPS Shipping API user ID which can be obtained from the USPS shipping API website. The assigned User Id can either be passed into the web service call as a parameter or can be coded as a parameter into the Request object.

I am trying to create a URL for Spoke Mobile to page users when our email system is down and we can't use the normal email alerts.
