It helps to remove special characters, such as non-utf-8 characters either control characters or unicode characters from text that is not printable or can't be parsed by downstream systems.

There is also $C(32) in this condition; sometimes NBSP appears in the text and it will not be recognized by TIE, but downstream it displays as "?".

Java External Language Gateway

If you like Java and have a thriving Java ecosystem at work into which you need to incorporate IRIS, it's not a problem. Java External Language Gateway will do it seamlessly, almost. This gateway serves as a bridge between Java and Object Script in IRIS. You can create objects of Java classes in IRIS and call their methods. You just need a jar file to do this.

As we all know, InterSystems is a great company.

Their products can be just as useful as they are complex.

Yet, our pride sometimes prevents us from admitting that we might not understand some concepts or products that InterSystems offers for us.

Today we are beginning a series of articles explaining how some of the intricate InterSystems products work, obviously simply and clearly.

In this essay, I will clarify what Machine Learning is and how to take advantage of it.... because this time, you WILL KNOW for sure what I am talking about.

HTTP and HTTPS with REST API

HTTP and HTTPS with REST API

Hello

The HTTP protocol allows you to obtain resources, such as HTML documents. It is the basis of any data exchange on the Web and a client-server protocol, meaning that requests are initiated by the recipient, usually a Web browser.

REST APIs take advantage of this protocol to exchange messages between client and server. This makes REST APIs fast, lightweight, and flexible. REST APIs use the HTTP verbs GET, POST, PUT, DELETE, and others to indicate the actions they want to perform.

When we make a call to a RESt API, what actually happens is an HTTP call. The API receives this call and according to the requested verb and path, the API performs the desired action. In the case of the Iris implementation we can see this clearly in the URLMap definition area:

In this article, exceptions are covered.

Working with Exceptions

Instead of returning a %Status response, you can raise and throw an Exception. You are then responsible for catching the exception and validating it. IRIS provides five main classes to handle exceptions effectively. Additionally, you can create custom exception class definition based on your needs.

InterSystems FAQ rubric

Mirroring only synchronizes database files.

To synchronize other files required for your application (CSP files, images, documents, etc.) between the two servers that make up the mirror set follow one of the approaches:

  1. Place those files on a shared disk by introducing a NAS or similar device
  2. Or use file sync software to synchronize files between two servers.

What is JWT?

JWT (JSON Web Token) is an open standard (RFC 7519) that offers a lightweight, compact, and self-contained method for securely transmitting information between two parties. It is commonly used in web applications for authentication, authorization, and information exchange.

A JWT is typically composed of three parts:

1. JOSE (JSON Object Signing and Encryption) Header
2. Payload
3. Signature

Introduction

The InterSystems IRIS Data Platform has long been known for its performance, interoperability, and flexibility across programming languages. For years, developers could use IRIS with Python, Java, JavaScript, and .NET — but Go (or Golang) developers were left waiting.

Golang Logo

That wait is finally over.

The new go-irisnative driver brings GoLang support to InterSystems IRIS, implementing the standard database/sql API. This means Go developers can now use familiar database tooling, connection pooling, and query interfaces to build applications powered by IRIS.

Why GoLang Support Matters

GoLang is a language designed for simplicity, concurrency, and performance — ideal for cloud-native and microservices-based architectures. It powers some of the world’s most scalable systems, including Kubernetes, Docker, and Terraform.

Bringing IRIS into the Go ecosystem enables:

  • Lightweight, high-performance services using IRIS as the backend.
  • Native concurrency for parallel query execution or background processing.
  • Seamless integration with containerized and distributed systems.
  • Idiomatic database access through Go’s database/sql interface.

This integration makes IRIS a perfect fit for modern, cloud-ready Go applications.

The Good Old Days

The %Library.DynamicObject class has been in IRIS since before it became IRIS. If you have been using it since the Cache days, you may want to brush up on some of its changes.

In Cache 2018, the %Get method only had one argument. It was the key to retrieving from the JSON, meaning that if your JSON object called myObj, it would look like the following:

OAuth2 with Microsoft

Hello Community,

I'm starting to explore OAuth2 and, as a first step, I want to set up an OAuth2 authentication with Microsoft. I've created a small sample page that attempts to sign in with Microsoft. However, after entering the user credentials, the redirection doesn't work.

Documentation Issues

Who do we report Documentation issues to?

Since moving to the new format, when searching for things within the documentation I get a blank screen with no results.

When I type in my search criteria, I can see it trying to find results but does not return results.

This does not seem like it is limited to a certain Web Browser, as I have seen this happen in Chrome and Edge

Thanks

Scott

FHIR SQL Builder: step by step

The FHIR standard establishes a powerful but flexible data model that can smoothly adapt to the complexities of operational healthcare data management. This flexibility comes at the cost of a data model with many tables and relationships, even for simple data such as the patient's record of telephone numbers, addresses, and emails. It would easily require querying 4 different tables. However, FHIR SQL Builder eliminates this problem, allowing you to create visual projections (mappings) in web wizards.

I'm attempting to streamline a process for renaming PDF documents received from multiple vendors to conform to a specification provided by an EMR vendor for ingestion. Things like Document ID, Document Type, Date of Service, Account Number, MRN, etc. all must be included in the filename at defined offsets and lengths. Most of the required values can be extracted from the inbound file's name and the few remaining are static values that would be the same (or handled via a lookup table based on source) for all documents.

SharePoint/ SPO API with intersystems

As part of the Open Exchange competition Salford Royal (Dean White and Mark O'Reilly) developed a REST API for sharepoint as a template that works but can also be a starting point to your own Rest Applications

Prerequisites

This is using the v1 REST sharepoint API you need a tennant id, client id, client secret and tennant name

Setup

Configure an OAuth server

The code in the middle is the tennant ID

Hi developers!

Observing the avalanche of AI-driven and vibe-coding developer tools that have been appearing lately almost every month with more and more exciting dev features, I was puzzled whether it is possible to leverage it with InterSystems IRIS. At least to build a frontend. And the answer - yes! At least with the approach I followed.

Here is my recipe to prompt the UI vs InterSystems IRIS Backend:

  1. Have the REST API on the IRIS side, which reflects some Open API (swagger) spec.
  2. Generate the UI with any vibe-coding tool (e.g., Lovable) and point the UI to the REST API endpoint.
  3. Profit!

Here is the result of my own exercise - a 100% prompted UI vs IRIS REST API that allows to list, create, update delete entries of a persistent class (Open Exchange, frontend source, video):

What is the recipe in detail?

The "Ask Developer Community AI" tool is an excellent resource for studying for the certification. I asked it about each topic that will be covered in the test and the results are below.
Note: I classified each answer by the assertiveness that I consider as good, average and bad.

Note 2: The article has 4 parts, each one for an exam area.

Over the years, I’ve noticed that certain SQL questions come up repeatedly on the InterSystems Developer Community, especially about using the LIKE predicate in different contexts. Common variations include:

and many more derivatives. So, I decided to write an article that focuses on how LIKE works in InterSystems IRIS SQL, especially when used with variables in Embedded SQL, Dynamic SQL, and Class Queries, while touching on pattern escaping and special character searches.

First of all, I'd like to mention that InterSystems IRIS SQL offers most of the capabilities available in other relational DBMS that implement a later version of the SQL standard. But at the same time, it's important to mention that apart from relational access, in IRIS you can also use other models to get the same data, for example, object or document models.

On this note, let's look at the LIKE predicate and how this tool is used in SQL for pattern matching.

So, you checked your server and saw that IRISTEMP is growing too much. There's no need to panic. Let’s investigate the issue before your storage runs out.

Step 1: Confirm the IRISTEMP Growth Issue

Before assuming IRISTEMP is the problem, let’s check its actual size.

Check the Free Space

Run the following command in the IRIS terminal:

%SYS>do ^%FREECNT

When prompted, enter:

My main goal of this article was to prove the use of InterSystems IRIS for Health for REST FHIR interoperability between multiple applications. In this use case, some initiating application makes a REST call to IRIS for Health (which is merely a passthrough for REST calls) to retrieve FHIR data from an Oracle Health R4 FHIR repository. Ideally, it simplifies the syntax for calling the Oracle Health APIs.
