This is a list of all the posts in the Data Platforms’ capacity planning and performance series in order. Also a general list of my other posts. I will update as new posts in the series are added.

You will notice that I wrote some posts before IRIS was released and refer to Caché. I will revisit the posts over time, but in the meantime, Generally, the advice for configuration is the same for Caché and IRIS. Some command names may have changed; the most obvious example is that anywhere you see the ^pButtons command, you can replace it with ^SystemPerformance.

While some posts are updated to preserve links, others will be marked as strikethrough to indicate that the post is legacy. Generally, I will say, "See: some other post" if it is appropriate.

Capacity Planning and Performance Series

Generally, posts build on previous ones, but you can also just dive into subjects that look interesting.

Enterprises need to grow and manage their global computing infrastructures rapidly and efficiently while simultaneously optimizing and managing capital costs and expenses. Amazon Web Services (AWS) and Elastic Compute Cloud (EC2) computing and storage services meet the needs of the most demanding Caché based application by providing
a highly robust global computing infrastructure.

I am pleased to announce the third 2016.2 field test kit, 2016.2.0.590.0.

In the week since the last field test posting Development has made over a hundred fixes and improvements in Atelier, Enterprise Manager, Ensemble and Caché. Unlike the previous field test kit, though, in which the changes were distributed evenly over multiple areas and products, in this kit over half of the changes are associated just with Atelier.

Task: Build a development stack that enables state-of-the-art rapid development with a stable but adaptive back end.
Approach: Use InterSystems’ new document data model to achieve modern full-stack development

The MEAN stack is a very popular stack for building applications quickly that can change at a rapid pace. We will explore the benefits of such a stack and how you can tackle the requirements for modern and fast paced front-end development with support of a stable, but yet adaptive back-end using our new document data model.

Our company is looking for someone with expert object script skills and experience developing with REST using Caché. We have an existing application that currently supports a mobile application and a web application. The API is up and running but we need another developer to add new features and keep up with demand.

Experience with Amazon AWS is highly desired as the api is running on Windows in EC2. Familiarity with GitHub is also required.

Pay can be negotiated on a per hour basis after you provide an estimate for the time required to complete a given feature.

NewBie's Corner Session: 5 Operator Precedence

Welcome to NewBie's Corner, a weekly or biweekly post covering basic Caché Material.

Click on the Caché Cube in your system tray and select Terminal to try out the commands.

Order Precedence means the order in which mathematical operators are executed. In a Mathematical expression, you may have Multiplication, Addition, Subtraction, and Division. Which of these are executed first, second, third, etc.?

The basic Operator Precedence of mathematics is:

In previous articles on iKnow, we described a number of demo applications (iKnow demo apps parts 1, 2, 3, 4 & 5) that are either part of the regular kit or can be easily installed from GitHub. All of those applications assumed you already had your iKnow domain ready, with your data of interest loaded and ready for exploration. In this article, we'll shed more light on how exactly you can get to that stage: how you define and then build a domain.

NewBie's Corner Session 25 Globals, Variables, and Arrays Part 1

Welcome to NewBie's Corner, a weekly or biweekly post covering basic Caché Material.

Globals, Arrays, and Variables

A thorough understanding of Globals, Arrays, and Variables is foundational for every Caché developer.

A Global may be:

Scalar (a single element), as in a Global Variable

Cross-origin Resource Sharing (CORS) is one of the basic security features built into browsers. CORS controls accessing resources from a HTML page in domains other than the original domain. It is particularly important for AJAX calls. Since RESTful services can be used as data provider to any AJAX call, you have to be able to control cross-origin access. By default services are not allowed to do CORS. You are going to learn how to enable it for Ensemble RESTful services.

Task: Provide high availability (HA) and disaster recovery (DR) in diverse architectures that demand high performance, including replication over long distances
Approach: Give examples of mirror architectures in disparate environments, including geographically separated systems. Discuss performance considerations and advances in InterSystems’ mirroring technology

In this session you will learn about deploying Mirroring to provide HA and DR in diverse architectures that demand high performance and throughput. Challenges and solutions to achieving high throughput will be covered along with mirror architectures that involve long distances and disparate environments.

Task: Reduce the need for skilled developers to define and normalize data from outside sources
Approach: Use the Ensemble Record Mapper and other tools to automatically define comma-delineated and fixed-width data structures

If you need skilled software developers to define and normalize data coming from business partners or customers, you probably have a backlog of unsatisfied requests. The record mapper and other tools allow analysts to define comma delimited and fixed width data structures without needing a developer and this session explains how this can be incorporated into an application to create an efficient and effective way to clear that backlog.

NewBie's Corner Session 2 Variables Set and Write commands

Welcome to NewBie's Corner, a weekly or biweekly post covering basic Caché Material.

Session 2 – Click on the Caché Cube in your system tray and select Terminal to try out the commands.

Variables

Like other computer programming languages, Caché uses Variables and the values they represent to control programming. Variables are elements that represent data values. Manipulating and interrogating variables is at the root of programming.

Task: Take advantage of the NoSQL paradigm without adding another tool
Approach: Provide sample use cases that are an excellent fit for InterSystems’ new document data model

Description: Designing applications always requires you to make assumptions about your data model. Come to this session to learn how you can effectively handle the cases where you have to rapidly evolve your model. We will also discuss other use cases that are an awesome fit for the flexible document data model.

Problem: I’ve observed the NoSQL landscape and like the direction, but I have no use-case that fits and I do not want to add yet another tool.

Solution: InterSystems now has support for a well integrated document data model that brings the NoSQL paradigm to the enterprise within your current stack.

Task: Build a composite application that bridges data silos
Approach: Give a real-world example of combining data from multiple sources to run a composite application

Most organizations need to bridge silos of data or combine separate applications. This session describes techniques for building composite applications and silos. The session also looks at a real application that does this. It uses workflow to assign cases to individuals for investigation and extracts information from multiple systems to provide the investigator with a complete context for the case at the scene of the incident.
