We are excited to announce a new part of InterSystems documentation that makes it easier to upgrade InterSystems IRIS® data platform, InterSystems IRIS® for Health™, or HealthShare® Health Connect. The Upgrade Impact Checklist at https://docs.intersystems.com/upgrade shows you all the things you need to consider – and only the things you need to consider – in an upgrade between any two versions. This takes all the content from our "Incompatibility History" and adds convenient filters, higher-level categories, and the ability to export the list as a CSV file so you can use it as a true checklis

For your convenience InterSystems is posting the typical install steps for the operating systems that are supported with InterSystems IRIS.

For Microsoft Windows, please consult the InterSystems product documentation.

The IRIS installer will detect if a web server is installed on the same machine, which gives you the option to automatically have the web server configured.

All Apache installations will require sudo (recommended) or root permission to install the web server. This requirement supports recommended best practices.

For Red Hat (RHEL), InterSystems is installing SELinux files to

InterSystems has decided to stop further development of the InterSystems IRIS Natural Language Processing, formerly known as iKnow, technology and label it as deprecated as of the 2023.3 release of InterSystems IRIS. InterSystems will continue to support existing customers using the technology, but does not recommend starting new development projects outside of the core text exploration use cases it was originally designed for. Other use cases involving natural language are increasingly well-served using novel techniques based on Large Language Models, an area InterSystems is also investigatin

It’s hard to believe that this wraps up our first year of quarterly platform updates.  Thank you for making this a great first year.  Today’s update talks about the planned Minimum Supported CPU list, OpenSSL 3.0 for AIX reaching GA, and a bit more.  We’ll be back for 2024!

This update aims to share recent changes as well as our best current knowledge on upcoming changes, but predicting the future is tricky business and this shouldn’t be considered a committed roadmap.

With that said, on to the update…

InterSystems has decided to stop further development of SAM (System Alerting & Monitoring) and label it as deprecated as of today.  InterSystems will continue to support existing customers using the technology, but it is no longer recommended for new deployments.

We’ve found that most customers who are interested in the type of observability provided by SAM have chosen to connect IRIS’s metrics API & structured logs to their organization’s existing observability platform in order to have a more complete view of their operational platform.

As first announced in May, and after many presentations and robust discussions at Global Summit 2023, we are continuing with the plans to deprecate InterSystems Studio (deprecated designates a feature or technology that InterSystems no longer actively develops, and for which better options exist).

InterSystems Studio was deprecated in 2023.2 but will continue to ship with versions 2023.3 and 2024.1. The latter will be the last release that includes Studio as part of the Windows kit, and it will be the only version that allows connections to future versions of InterSystems IRIS. This version t

I wanted to provide a heads up of an improvement in how we generate and call method code in IRIS 2023.1.

A class in IRIS is composed of two main runtime components:

  1. Class Descriptor - A highly optimized list of methods, properties, class parameters that make up the class along with attributes associated with each of these e.g. public/private setting.
  2. ObjectScript code - A set of routines that contain the ObjectScript code to be executed when a method is called.

When you call a method of a class/object the dispatch code looks in the class descriptor to find the method, then it verifies

InterSystems will end support for using the VxFS filesystem with InterSystems IRIS and label it as deprecated as of the release of InterSystems IRIS 2023.3.  InterSystems will continue to support any existing customers using the technology, but it is no longer recommended for new deployments.

VxFS had only been supported on SUSE Linux.  Impacted customers are encouraged to migrate to XFS or another supported filesystem.

Customers with questions should reach out to their account team or contact me directly.

End of support for CentOS

CentOS will no longer be a supported development platform as of the release of InterSystems IRIS 2023.3.

CentOS had been a supported development platform to give developers a free-to-use equivalent to Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL) for IRIS development.  As you're probably aware, Red Hat made significant changes to CentOS which moved it to being “upstream” of RHEL. This means it has bugs & features not yet included in RHEL, which can cause problems for developers building on the platform.

Developers using CentOS are encouraged to take advantage of Red Hat’s free

InterSystems has corrected two defects regarding connectivity. These defects and their corrections are independent of each other.

This alert addresses them both because there are point releases containing both corrections.

Both defects only impact versions 2019.1.4 and 2020.1.4 of:

  • InterSystems IRIS®
  • InterSystems IRIS for Health
  • HealthShare® Health Connect

Neither defect impacts any released version of HealthShare Unified Care Record®, Information Exchange, Health Insight, Patient Index, Provider Directory, Care Community, Personal Community, or Healthcare Action Engine.

CCR Client ItemSets now have a "stale" cut-off time. When a client-bound ItemSet is created in CCR, a user has 24 hours to deploy it to any environments. After 24 hours, this ItemSet is no longer deployable or downloadable. The deploy links will be disabled and instead the user will notice a "Refresh ItemSet" option which will create a new ItemSet. Users can then use this fresh ItemSet to deploy their changes, see below:
