I've mentioned the QEWD project in this group before: it's a Node.js-based platform for web, Native and REST applications which tightly integrates with Cache.  It uses a somewhat different philosophy to the use of Node.js than the norm, and I've now published an article that explains this approach and the unique benefits that arise as a result.

It turns out that, integrated via QEWD, Cache is an ideal bed-fellow for Node.js.  QEWD makes the integration of Cache and Node.js exceptionally fast, simple and intuitive to use, but also extremely powerful.

In our last lesson, we added a relationship between 2 persistent classes.  We are clearly going to need to start creating REST Services to expose CRUD operations for each of these classes, but before we do that, we should really finish defining our linkages.  We added code to our Widget toJSON to spool off related Accessory data, so we should really do the reciprocal and allow Accessories to return all Widgets that are compatible.

The code we can use is essentially the same as we used on the Widget side.

I'd like to share the code we used in a hands-on session in the last InterSystems Iberia Summit (Spain) about developing a simple Angular app using InterSystems IRIS as backend.

In this article I'd like to discuss asynchronous REST and approaches to implementing it.

Why do we need asynchronous REST? Simply put - answering the request takes too much time. While most requests usually can be satisfied immediately, some can't. The reasons are varied:

• You need to perform time-consuming calculations
• Performing action actually takes time (for example container creation)

At the end of our last lesson, we ended with our page displaying a nice (but garish) Angular Material Toolbar, and our Widget data displaying in a list of Material cards.  Our page feels a bit static, and we already know that the large number of Widgets that we will be dealing with will not be especially usable on a static list.  What can we do to help?

A filtering function would be very helpful, so let's add a text input to the top of the page. We will bind this to a variable in the $scope - widgetFilterText so that Angular has access to the value we type in.

Using Flask, REST API, and IAM with InterSystems IRIS

In this article we will see the implementation of a REST API to perform the maintenance of a CRUD, using Flask and IAM.

In this first part of the article we will see the construction and publication of the REST API in Iris.

First, let's create our persistent class to store the data. To do this, we go to Iris and create our class:

Cross-origin Resource Sharing (CORS) is one of the basic security features built into browsers. CORS controls accessing resources from a HTML page in domains other than the original domain. It is particularly important for AJAX calls. Since RESTful services can be used as data provider to any AJAX call, you have to be able to control cross-origin access. By default services are not allowed to do CORS. You are going to learn how to enable it for Ensemble RESTful services.

The Resource Map class (the subclass of %CSP.REST) controls whether CORS is enabled. There are two approaches to do.

The latter is used in even broader scenarios since the QR Code can store more information than a simple bar code. Thus, it is important to have the ability to generate barcodes and QR Codes or read the data stored in them from an image or a PDF. In our last lesson, we implemented a new REST Service to allow us to perform CRU operations on Widgets, and refactored our Controllers to allow the page setup to be decouple from the content.

When we created our Widget Services, we did not implement a Deletion operation, which the HTTP Delete verb provides.  As this is a base table for other parts of the Widgets Direct empire, we don't want to be able to do a hard Delete of the WIdget values, as this could cause issues with our ordering and billing modules.

As a developer who uses Cache as DB for a couple of projects, I'm using REST API's every time, knowing how to consume a resource from REST API, in my opinion, it's crucial to know how to consume external REST Api's using %Net.HttpRequest because it enables integration with modern web applications and services, and it's a crucial skill for a backend developer who loves and uses Cache as a DB.

What and who is %Net.

Surely you wanted to use the OpenAPI Specification (OAS) JSON you used for your spec class on the iris-web-swagger-ui iris package. The generated OAS from the ##class(%REST.API).GetWebRESTApplication(...) method is very crude, with no description on the parameters or the expected response structure.

So after creating your REST application from an OAS you should have:

• A generated application.disp.cls class
• An application.spec.cls class (we'll add a path to the OpenAPI spec that's residing in the "XData OpenAPI" property)

I cloned iris-interoperability-template for my app interoperability-test. I wanted to develop an app to test interfaces in Interoperability productions.

I have never run a container in Docker Desktop. I always run containers in AWS. My first problem was that I got an error when I tried to build the image using docker-compose. The error was about BuildKit. I worked around the error by building the image with a docker build command relying on DOCKER_BUILDKIT environment variable:

Some time ago, InterSystems introduced the concept of %DynamicObjects.
This feature is a powerful tool that makes it very easy to convert any string of JSON text to objects and vice versa.
However, in the work that J2 Interactive is doing for our customers, there are a couple of things that "need some tweaking".

Very often, we create REST services for our customers. Those services have a payload (in JSON format) that contains information that our customer expects in the form of an object that is proprietary to them.

I have Mac OSX and Docker Desktop 2.2 (Engine 19.03).

I have a REST service running on my localhost (Mac) and I was trying to consume it from IRIS running in a Docker container.

If you try something like that don't use localhost as HTTP Server setting (using a Business Operation for example).

You have to use host.docker.internal.

In this short article I would like to present an example of use that surely many of you who work with IRIS as the backend for your web applications have faced on more than one occasion and it is how to send a file to your server from the frontend.

Generally the simplest way I have found to perform this task is to transform the file from the frontend to the Base64 format and make a POST call to our server attaching the Base64 obtained to a JSON message in which I indicate in a parameter the name of the file and in another the encoded data.

This quick guide shows how to serve HTTPS requests with InterSystems API Management. Advantage here is that you have your certs on one separated server and you don't need to configure each backend web-server separately.

Here's how:

1. Buy the domain name.

2. Adjust DNS records from your domain to the IAM IP address.

3. Generate HTTPS certificate and private key. I use Let's Encrypt - it's free.

4. Start IAM if you didn't already.

5. Send this request to IAM:
