Why should you connect Flask to InterSystems IRIS?

The first thing that comes to mind when we think about combining Flask with IRIS is a portal to interact with your clients and partners. A good example would be a website for patients to access their clinical exams. Of course, this case would require a whole new layer of security, which we did not cover in our last article. Welcome dear members of the Community to the presentation and first article of a small project that will demonstrate the capabilities of InterSystems IRIS to provide full backup functionality for a web application developed in Angular. This article will be limited to presenting the concept as well as the InterSystems IRIS functionalities used in a general way, going into more detail in subsequent articles.

A few months ago, I faced a significant challenge: streamlining the handling of business logic in our application. My goal was to extract the business logic from the code and hand it over to analysts. Dealing with a multitude of rules could easily result in a code littered with countless "if" statements, especially if the coder lacked an understanding of cyclomatic complexity. Such code becomes a source of pain for those working with it—difficult to write, test, and develop.

I created this application considering how to convert images such as prescription forms into FHIR messages

It recognizes the text in the image through OCR technology and extracts it, which is then transformed into fhir messages through AI (LLA language model).

Finally, sending the message to the fhir server of IntereSystems can verify whether the message meets the fhir requirements. If approved, it can be viewed on the select page.

Technology Strategy

When I started this project I had set myself limits:
Though there is a wide range of almost ready-to-use modules in various languages
and though IRIS has excellent facilities and interfaces to make use of them
I decided to solve the challenge "totally internal" just with embedded Python, SQL, ObjectScript
Neither Java, nor Nodes, nor Angular, PEX, ... you name it.
The combination of embedded Python and SQL is preferred. ObjectScript is just my last chance.
