New Video: Migrating to NoPWS

Hi all! I just wanted to share a new video – the first in a series of three – addressing the migration from the InterSystems Private Web Server to an external web server. This video covers the process of installing a web server and upgrading your IRIS instance in a Linux/Unix environment. Two more videos on the way will show the process for a mirrored setup in Linux/Unix, and for a single instance in Windows.

EnsLib.HL7.Adapter.TCPInboundAdapter has a Connected property that I assume is set to the state of the connection session with the remote host; i.e. 1 when Connected, 0 when not. I'm assuming this is the property the Production Configuration web page uses to display the state of the service (green for Connected, red for not Connected, etc.).

How can I interrogate the value of that property of an active service, via a method running in separate process?

(It really seems like I should know this, but I'm just not finding the right magical incantation)

In my previous article, Using LIKE with Variables and Patterns in SQL, we explored how the LIKE predicate behaves in different scenarios, from Embedded SQL to Dynamic SQL, and what happens to performance when wildcards and variables come into play. That piece was about getting comfortable writing a working LIKE query. But writing SQL that works is only the starting point. To build applications that are reliable, scalable, and secure, you need to understand the best practices that underpin all SQL, including queries that use LIKE.

This article takes the next step. We’ll look at a few key points to help strengthen your SQL code, avoid common pitfalls, and make sure your SELECT statements run not just correctly, but also efficiently and safely. I'll use SELECT statements with LIKE predicate as an example along the way, showing how these broader principles directly affect your queries and their results.

*This is what Gemini came up with for this article, kinda cute.

InterSystems FAQ rubric

This error occurs when an instance of the class is already open at compile time.

There are two ways to deal with this issue:

  1. Terminate the process or application that has the instance open
  2. Compile options in the studio build menu: Check the compile flag “Compile classes in use” and compile.

If you want to determine which process is using the class, try the sample routine below.

I'm trying to execute SQL on a EC2 via SSM:

import boto3

instanceid = "i-123456789"
sql = """SELECT path FROM Security.Applications WHERE ID = '/csp/sys'"""
template = """su - irisusr -c 'cat << EOF | iris sql iris -U %SYS
                """ + sql + """
                        q
                        EOF'
                       """
template = [line.strip() for line in template.splitlines()]
template = """\n""".join(template)
ssm_client = boto3.client('ssm')
response = ssm_client.send_command(
            InstanceIds=[instanceid],
            DocumentName="AWS-RunShellScript",
            Comment=AWS,
            Parameters={'commands': template})
