Java is a general-purpose computer-programming language that is concurrent, class-based, object-oriented, and specifically designed to have as few implementation dependencies as possible.

This is the second part of an article pair where I walk you through:

  • Part I - Intro and Quick Tour (the previous article)
    • What is it?
    • Spinning up an InterSystems IRIS Cloud Document deployment
    • Taking a quick tour of the service via the service UI
  • Part II - Sample (Dockerized) Java App (this article)
    • Grabbing the connection details and TLS certificate
    • Reviewing a simple Java sample that creates a collection, inserts documents, and queries them
    • Setting up and running the Java (Dockerized) end‑to‑end sample

As mentioned the goal is to give you a smooth “first run” experience.

hi 😊,

i'm able to LOAD DATA in IRIS from a rather complex, say Oracle's, query. It works pretty well but requires a target table created aforehand:

LOAD DATA FROM JDBC CONNECTION SOME_OTHER_SERVER QUERY 'complex query here' INTO TargetTable

is there a way to base such target table on the same query ?
CREATE FOREIGN TABLE seems to require a column definition which I would prefer to be taken from the query
CREATE TABLE AS SELECT seems to be for local queries and other methods, like Linked Table Wizard or %SYSTEM.SQL.Schema.

If you already know Java (or .Net) and perhaps also have used other document databases (or looking for one), but you are new to the InterSystems world, this post should help you.

InterSystems IRIS Cloud Document is a fully managed document database that lets you store JSON documents and query them with familiar SQL syntax, delivered as a cloud service managed by InterSystems.

In this article pair I’ll walk you through:

  • Part I - Intro and Quick Tour (this article)
    • What is it?
    • Spinning up an InterSystems IRIS Cloud Document deployment
    • Taking a quick tour of the service via the service UI
  • Part II - Sample (Dockerized) Java App (the next article)
    • Grabbing the connection details and TLS certificate
    • Reviewing a simple Java sample that creates a collection, inserts documents, and queries them
    • Setting up and running the Java (Dockerized) end‑to‑end sample

The goal is to give you a smooth “first run” experience.

I’m trying to find a way to manage globals from our Java application. We have two separate features:

  • Managing tables normally using SQL

  • Managing globals, since some globals exist without class or table definitions

Cache version : Cache for UNIX (Red Hat Enterprise Linux for x86-64) 2016.1.1 (Build 108U_SU), Thu Jul 7 2016 09:39:04 EDT

I tried to retrieve the globals tree, update node values, and append nodes using SQL by calling stored procedures, but I couldn’t find any procedures for adding, updating, or deleting nodes.

I also tried using cacheextreme.jar to access the globals API directly.

Global Guard AI

1 Introduction

In environments that use InterSystems IRIS, globals are the physical foundation of data storage. Although system queries and administrative tools exist for metric inspection, global growth analysis is usually reactive: the problem is generally only noticed when there is disk pressure or performance impact.

Hello Community,

I am facing a JDBC connection issue after migrating from Caché 2016 to Caché 2018.1. When I attempt to connect using the following connection settings:

CACHE_DATASOURCE_URL=jdbc:Cache://localhost:1972/TEST

CACHE_DB_USERNAME=test

CACHE_DB_PASSWORD=test

I consistently receive the following error:

[Cache JDBC] Communication link failure: Access Denied

This configuration worked perfectly with Caché 2016. I have verified the following:

  1. The namespace (TEST) exists and is correctly specified in the connection URL.
  2. The credentials (username: test, password: test) are correct.

Technical Documentation — Quarkus IRIS Monitor System

1. Purpose and Scope

This module enables integration between Quarkus-based Java applications and InterSystems IRIS’s native performance monitoring capabilities.
It allows a developer to annotate methods with @PerfmonReport, which triggers IRIS’s ^PERFMON routines automatically around method execution, generating performance reports without manual intervention.

2. System Components

2.1 Annotation: @PerfmonReport

  • Defined as a CDI InterceptorBinding.
  • Can be applied to methods or classes.

I need to build an integration solution that reads messages from a Kafka topic. The topic has 3 partitions and contains several million messages.

For certain reasons, I can only use the standard EnsLib.Kafka.Service class and cannot use either KafkaClient or Python.

To measure performance and collect statistics I created a simple key + timestamp table with no indexes (so it is unlikely to be a bottleneck). Next, I started an instance of EnsLib.Kafka.Service. In the OnProcessInput method, I receive a message, extract the key from it, get the current time, and write the row to the table.

Building a Sensor Data Demo with Spring Boot and InterSystems IRIS

In the era of IoT and connected devices, sensor data is everywhere—tracking temperature in logistics, monitoring equipment performance, or recording environmental conditions. But capturing, storing, and analyzing this data in real time requires more than just hardware sensors.

It’s a practical example that combines Spring Boot, InterSystems IRIS, and a simple sensor simulation script to show how sensor data can flow from generation to storage and alerting.

We currently have Business Operation that we built to use the EnsLib.SQL.OutboundAdapter so we can make Microsoft SQL Server Stored Procedure calls. The BO is attached to a Java Gateway Service.

Some of our MS SQL Databases have moved from being OnPrem to Azure Cloud. We have started seeing where we are receiving errors on the BO saying that we cannot connect to the Azure Database, but we never receive a Disconnect from the Azure Database.

Reviewing my published packages, I identified a nasty bug in IRIS Native API

  • There is a method in  %Net.DB.Iris named function ()
  • It's equivalent to  ObjectScript $$label^routine(param)
  • It used to work fine 2 years ago, when I published my command-line-extension packages
  • Now it is broken since at least 1 year and throws <PROTECT>
  • I identified it for ObjecScript, Java, Python, Node.js
  • It is reported as WRC# 1002589
  • For all 4 cases, I also verified a workaround
    • Instead of calling an ObjectScript Function you call a Classmethod
    • It's by %Net.DB.Iris ClassMethodValue(.

Hello. Currently, we are developing using Cache 2018 version.
Our team is working on improving an existing legacy program so that it can also be used on the web.

Before asking my question, here is the development environment.

  • IDE: IntelliJ
  • Framework: Spring Boot, MyBatis
  • DB Connection: JDBC (using the library provided by InterSystems)

Currently, we are successfully mapping global data through the %PERSISTENT class and able to query it with SQL. However, the problem is that the retrieved "Korean" data is all broken.
