End of support for CentOS

CentOS will no longer be a supported development platform as of the release of InterSystems IRIS 2023.3.

CentOS had been a supported development platform to give developers a free-to-use equivalent to Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL) for IRIS development.  As you're probably aware, Red Hat made significant changes to CentOS which moved it to being “upstream” of RHEL. This means it has bugs & features not yet included in RHEL, which can cause problems for developers building on the platform.

InterSystems has made the decision to stop further development of the InterSystems Cloud Manager and label it as deprecated as of the InterSystems IRIS 2023.3 release.  InterSystems will continue to support existing customers using the technology, but it is no longer recommended for new deployments.

Customers in the cloud who are interested in deploying and managing an IRIS deployment with many systems are encouraged to consider Kubernetes and the InterSystems Kubernetes Operator, which has very similar functionality to ICM.

InterSystems has corrected two defects regarding connectivity. These defects and their corrections are independent of each other.

This alert addresses them both because there are point releases containing both corrections.

Both defects only impact versions 2019.1.4 and 2020.1.4 of:

  • InterSystems IRIS®
  • InterSystems IRIS for Health
  • HealthShare® Health Connect

Neither defect impacts any released version of HealthShare Unified Care Record®, Information Exchange, Health Insight, Patient Index, Provider Directory, Care Community, Personal Community, or Healthcare Action Engine.

We often get questions about recent and upcoming changes to the list of platforms and frameworks that are supported by the InterSystems IRIS data platform.  This update aims to share recent changes as well as our best current knowledge on upcoming changes, but predicting the future is tricky business and this shouldn’t be considered a committed roadmap.

With that said, on to the update…

IRIS Production Operating Systems and CPU Architectures

Red Hat Enterprise Linux

  • Recent Changes
    • RHEL 9.2 & RHEL 8.8 were released in May, 2023. Red Hat is planning to support these releases for 4 years.

CCR Client ItemSets now have a "stale" cut-off time. When a client-bound ItemSet is created in CCR, a user has 24 hours to deploy it to any environments. After 24 hours, this ItemSet is no longer deployable or downloadable. The deploy links will be disabled and instead the user will notice a "Refresh ItemSet" option which will create a new ItemSet.

As previously announced at Global Summit 2022, InterSystems will discontinue shipping or installing an Apache-based web server (often referred to as the private web server or PWS); this change is currently planned for InterSystems IRIS 2023.2.

With this new approach, you have full control to choose which web server best suits your purposes, and how you configure, maintain, and update it. A key benefit of this change is that you will no longer have to wait for an updated kit from InterSystems to get the latest version, which is important especially in security vulnerability situations.

InterSystems IRIS Cloud IntegratedML is an option to this database-as-a-service that offers easy access to powerful Automated Machine Learning capabilities in a SQL-native form, through a set of simple SQL commands that can easily be embedded in application code to augment them with ML models that run close to the data.

Today, we announce the Developer Access Program for these two offerings. Application developers can now self-register for the service, create deployments and start building composable applications and smart data services, with all provisioning, configuration and administration taken care of by the service.

InterSystems is committed to providing a high quality developer experience including a great IDE (Integrated Developer Experience). For the past several years we have been evolving Visual Studio Code's ObjectScript tooling in parallel with our long-standing IDE, InterSystems Studio. There have been over 46,000 downloads of the VSCode-ObjectScript plugin, and the feedback from developers is that this is a great developer experience, and now superior to InterSystems Studio.

With our 2023.

InterSystems has corrected a defect that causes increased process memory usage.

Specifically, the increased consumption of local process partition memory occurs when executing $Order,  $Query, or Merge on local variables.  While this will have no detrimental impact for most running environments, environments that support a large number of processes or closely limit Maximum Per-Process Memorycould be impacted.  Some processes may experience <STORE> errors.

The defect exists in 2023.1.0.229.0 but it is reposted as 2023.1.0.235.

InterSystems is putting more emphasis on promoting our Early Access Program (EAP), in which users volunteer to work with new software before it becomes generally available. In fact, we will once again be promoting the program at Global Summit.

The software could be a full InterSystems IRIS release, but is usually focused on a new capability about which we want to collect feedback. The terms and requirements for joining an Early Access Program vary with the the software being evaluated.

Signing up is really simple. Go to this link and fill out the form.

Do you want to get updates for the EAPs?
