New command

The New command limits a variable's scope or range of use. In theory the New command is simple, in reality the New command is powerful and needs to be respected and understood. In Caché ObjectScript and MUMPS an entire chapter is devoted to it.

Plus Sign (+) operator

Typically, the Plus sign (+) adds two numbers together. This is true in COS (Caché ObjectScript), but COS uses it in other ways as well.

Set the variable X to a value of +12

(Possibly?) little-known fact: It's possible to use $ListBuild on the left hand side of the equals sign in a set command to extract multiple list values at once:

Order Precedence means the order in which mathematical operators are executed. In a Mathematical expression, you may have Multiplication, Addition, Subtraction, and Division. Which of these are executed first, second, third, etc.?

Caché and Cache

Caché and Cache are not the same. Caché is a product offered by InterSystems. Whereas Cache refers to memory storage.
In computing, a cache /ˈkæʃ/ KASH, is a hardware or software component that stores data so future requests for that data can be served faster; the data stored in a cache might be the result of an earlier computation, or the duplicate of data stored elsewhere.

Approach: Discuss what operating system and InterSystems metrics you should look at and how to interpret them

Systems behave differently when database activity scales up. In the worst case, bottlenecks appear and users are impacted. This session shows you which operating system and InterSystems metrics you should be looking at and how to interpret them so you can head off bottlenecks before they impact users. This sessions also shows strategies for planning infrastructure taking into consideration InterSystems' data platforms requirements.

I haven’t sent an update to this thread in a while and it should come as no surprise that there has been quite a lot of development going on since I wrote about build 632. In fact, there have been almost 300 changes covering most areas of the product.

The accumulated list of fixes to problems found in the field since build 632 includes the following changes:

Task: Upgrade with minimal downtime
Approach: Provide examples of planning minimal-downtime upgrades from a variety of starting scenarios

When upgrading Caché, Ensemble or your application on your business-critical system, you want zero or minimum downtime. This session explores the problems and options when upgrading, and how mirroring can reduce or eliminate business disruption, with practical steps and a demonstration.

Task: Model and access data as objects in .NET without designing the database first
Approach: Use InterSystems Entity Framework

Description: Come and experience how you can design your database model in .NET and evolve it over time by leveraging the Entity Framework.

Problem: Current bindings require database-first design. I cannot design my model in .NET.

Solution: The Entity Framework is an object-relational mapping framework that allows data-oriented applications to model and access their data as objects in .NET. Database- first is still supported but will fade away in future releases.

In Sessions’ 20 and 21 on Parameters we saw how to call one routine from another with parameters as well as calling one Label from another with parameters. In these examples, the data was passed through the parameters from the calling routine or label to the called routine or label.

MUMPS verses Caché, what's the difference?

MUMPS was developed at Massachusetts General Hospital during the 1960s. Through a series of experiences and companies over the years eventually MUMPS evolved into Caché. Some deny this but the facts are there. You can read through the various websites with Wikipedia and make up your own mind. The closest way to explain this is that Caché is a superset of MUMPS.

At the end of this year support for OpenSSL 1.0.1 will end. InterSystems has started the process to move to OpenSSL 1.0.2 and use the 1/28/2016 release (1.0.2f) for verification and product inclusion. I will update this post once InterSystems decided which versions will receive support for OpenSSL 1.0.2.
