A programming tool or software development tool is a computer program that software developers use to create, debug, maintain, or otherwise support other programs and applications.
I realize that Cache Studio is the standard method to edit routines. However, some clients make it difficult to access their server that supports Studio. Is there an editor that can be run from the programmer prompt that allows simple WYSIWYG editing of routines? I know there is a %Routine class that you can use to do command-line editing, but I am looking for a full screen editor.
What was the standard in OpenVMS Cache before there was Cache Studio?
Hi! As a developer who was forced to move from Mac to Windows (temporary) I found some things a bit confusing. In this article I would like to talk about some tweaks I made to make my experience smoother. I think it can help not only Mac users who need to use Windows environment (for ex. in VMs), but also can help some Windows users to make some things more convenient. Of course, all the points are subjective, the best setup is one that works for you.
All the tweaks are related to Windows 10 as I don’t have an access to Windows 11 at the moment.
There's plenty of goodness in the %-packages InterSystems supplies, and it seems that every new version of Caché brings something new. The browser-based class documentation (a.k.a. Documatic) generally provides a good level of information, but on the basis that "a picture is worth a thousand words" I sometimes want a diagram.
For example, when trying to navigate the %Dictionary package for a project that needed to find out about class definitions, here's one of the UML class diagrams I created.
Pouring The Coffee: Creating and scheduling a task
Don't you wish a fresh, hot cup of coffee could be waiting for you right when you get into the office? Let's automate that!
Cache and IRIS come with a built-in Task Manager, which should have a familiar feel to those used to using the Windows task scheduler or using cron on Linux. Your user account will need access to the %Admin_Task resource to use it, and you can access it in the management portal under System Operation -> Task Manager. When first installed, there are roughly 20 types of task that you can schedule.
One of the topics that comes up often when managing Ensemble productions is disk space:
The database (the CACHE.DAT file) grows in a rate that was unexpected; or the Journal files build up at a fast pace; or the database grows continuously though the system has a scheduled purge of the Ensemble runtime data.
It would have been better if these kind of phenomena would have been observed and accounted for yet at the development and testing stage rather than on a live system.
For this purpose I created a basic framework that could aid in this task.
I' have done some tests with Caché and Apache Zeppelin. I want to share my experince to use both systems together. I'll try to describe all steps that are required to config Zeppelin to connect to Caché.
I'm sure it was mentioned in some thread. I just can't find it anymore.
There is some setting that allows exporting .mac,.int,.cls from IRIS in a way that it can be imported by Caché without fiddling in the generated XML files
We are proud to annouce our latest release of CachéQuality to help you to find and solve coding errors, refactoring, help to follow you coding guidelines, etc. You can check the latest release notes here.
At the global summit in Phoenix, we (Lite Solutions) will be presenting a tool performing static code analysis on ObjectScript source files. You can see it in action at this URL:
I have been using embedded python for more than 2 years now on a daily basis.
May be it's time to share some feedback about this journey.
Why write this feedback? Because, I guess, I'm like most of the people here, an ObjectScript developer, and I think that the community would benefit from this feedback and could better understand the pros & cons of chosing embedded python for developing stuff in IRIS. And also avoid some pitfalls.
What I have is a criteria how to select "my" strings. What I need is to replace all of them with macro calls (using the same strings as arguments) in all classes of current namespace.
I was ready to write straightforward code, but at the last moment decided to ask the community: maybe I've overlooked a smarter option?
Any comments and advices would be great appreciated.

I know you're doing a big effort to build a new IDE in Eclipse ecosystem but Visual Studio Code is a new an even better and faster tool for coding... did you have any plans to release any COS extension for it in the near future? There you can already find extensions for all current more common progrmaming languages and it would be great to have COS as one of them.
For several years now Visual Studio Code has supported the notebook coding paradigm with a maturing UX and an API that is enabling a notebook extensions ecosystem to grow. One of the best-known notebook platforms is Jupyter Notebooks. A Microsoft team publishes an extension that allows VS Code to handle .ipynb notebook files. These can either work against a local Python environment or connect to a Jupyter Server, which typically hosts remote Python environments with beefier resources.
What if your InterSystems IRIS environments, whether local on your workstation or remote in your organization / cloud, could operate as Jupyter Servers? And not only for Embedded Python but also for ObjectScript and SQL
Sometimes you need quickly and easily import data into IRIS. For this, an IRIS import manager has been developed.
This application allows you to import JSON data and also provides a really simple interface for transferring data from MongoDB collections to IRIS globals. It has never been so easy.

Hi Community,
I'm pleased to announce DEVBOX, the code anywhere IDE for IRIS.
Please watch the video and let me know what you think. Would you use it?
Have you ever had to convert HL7v2 messages to FHIR (Fast Healthcare Interoperability Resources) and found the process complicated and confusing? InterSystems is rolling out a new cloud based SaaS offering called InterSystems FHIR Transformation Service, which makes the process easy. We are excited to announce an Early Access Preview Program for our new offering, and we would love to have you kick the tires and let us know what you think! All you need is a free AWS account, with an S3 bucket to drop in your HL7v2 messages, and another S3 bucket to get your FHIR output.
The question has come up several times and I saw mixed answers and no quick example
My personal preference is using CPIPE device as you get back exactly the output you will get at the command line interface of your OS . The tricky thing is to stop reading in time. The example just displays what you normally see in your console. it becomes useful if you look for things that you can't get from any $system.whatever()
CLM is a tool for localization/internationalization/adding multi-language support to a project based on InterSystems Caché.
Imagine that you have a ready project where all the content is in Russian, and you need to add an English localization to it. You wrap all your strings into resources, translate them into English and call the necessary resource for Russian or English when necessary. Nothing tricky, if you think about it. But what if there are lots of strings and there are mistakes in Russian (or English)? What if you need to localize in more than one language – say, ten? This is exactly the kind of project where you should use CLM. It will help you localize the entire content of your project into the necessary language and retain the possibility to correct entries.
