Hi Community,

Are you a Python developer? If so, you can already start building apps with InterSystems IRIS without learning a new programming language!

Use Python with InterSystems IRIS. Try the exercise.

👨‍💻Try this exercise to get started quickly with using Python's familiar DB-API interface to connect to an InterSystems IRIS database and run SQL queries.

💬What was your experience with the exercise? Let me know in the comments!

Hi,

I am using embeded python to utilize some pythonic library but i got a problem on my hand.
One of the python function i am using return multiple values

in python you would do something like that :

val1, val2, val3, = function(params)

In COS I got something like that :

lib = ##class(%SYS.Python).Import("lib")
val1 = lib.function(params)

And I don't know how to get the second and third values.
Is there a way to get them?

I am brand new to using AI. I downloaded some medical visit progress notes from my Patient Portal. I extracted text from PDF files. I found a YouTube video that showed how to extract metadata using an OpenAI query / prompt such as this one:

ollama-ai-iris/data/prompts/medical_progress_notes_prompt.txt at main · oliverwilms/ollama-ai-iris

I combined @Rodolfo Pscheidt Jr https://github.com/RodolfoPscheidtJr/ollama-ai-iris with some files from @Guillaume Rongier https://openexchange.intersystems.com/package/iris-rag-demo.

I attempted to run

python3 query_data.

I'm trying to deploy a python/flask application to an Iris4Health container (2025.1) but running into some issues with packages and where they should be installed.

First one if the flask packages themselves. I tried to installed the flask packages into the python external language server virtual environment, but even doing this when configuring the WSGI application in the web application section, it would complain about not having a WSGI framework. Once I created a custom container and added the flask package at the OS level, I was able to configure the web application without it complaining.

Hello,

I'm trying to set Caché-Python Binding on Mac, but there is a problem.

I performed installation and configuration of Caché-Python binding module based on the manual (URL)
including setting of PATH and LD_LIBRARY_PATH in "bash_profile",
and they seems to be done successfully (there was no error in the process).

However, when I execute test python file (test.py), it failed with error massage as below.
-----------------------Error Massage----------------------
Traceback (most recent call last):

I'm testing with an application I'm writing in python. But I noticed that the pythonbind3 library will only work on the same machine where the cache is running. Is there really such a dependency?

I'm trying to run the examples that are in the / dev / python / samples3 folder, but they only work if I set "LD_LIBRARY_PATH" with the path to the cache installation folder.

But... I have this error when LD_LIBRARY_PATH is empty:

[root@cache2018 samples3]# python CPTest2.py -user _SYSTEM -password xxxxxx Traceback (most recent call last): File "CPTest2.

I have a python script that is pulling the cache instance key expiration date ( KeyExpirationDate() ) which comes back as an integer. With the queryscript function - $ZDATE(73284) I can derive the actual expiration date. Is there a manner or method of creating an equivalent Python script that will convert the integer return by the KeyExpirationDate()  method into a date string?

Hello everybody,

I've been experimenting with Embedded Python and have been following the steps outlined in this documentation: https://docs.intersystems.com/irislatest/csp/docbook/DocBook.UI.Page.cl…

I'm trying to convert a python dictionary into an objectscript array but there is an issue with the 'arrayref' function, that is not working as in the linked example.

This is a snapshoot of my IRIS terminal:

USER>do ##class(%SYS.Python).Shell()

Python 3.10.12 (main, Nov 20 2023, 15:14:05) [GCC 11.4.

Question Hannah Sullivan · Aug 14, 2024

If anyone has experience debugging Embedded Python or has insight into why an ObjectScript method when called from a Python method would not work but would work when called directly via ObjectScript or in a Python shell, your help would be appreciated!

We have an ObjectScript ClassMethod called GetTemplateString() which takes in a templateName of String type and uses the template name to get the template object, access the Code, and read the code into a templateString. The string version of the Code is returned.

Question Evgeny Shvarov · Jun 25, 2023

Hi folks!

Consider I need to call a python function which name contains "_" symbol (which is quite often in Python). How it could be called from ObjectScript?

E.g. here is the code:

Set sm = ##class(%SYS.Python).Import("sample")

write sm.helloworld() ; function without _
white sm.hello_world() ; function with _ - won't compile.

Thanks in advance!

Question Fred Gustafsson · Sep 8, 2022

I'm after some more in-depth information about how the embedded python is implemented with regards to how it works when a python method is called from a CSP page. Will it run in the same Windows process? Will there be any issues with multitasking (considering python doesn't seem very good at this)?

Also, is there a performance penalty to pay for running embedded python vs "using IRIS APIs from Python".

Another question is what python interpreter the embedded python is using? Is it an Intersystems one or the regular c.python? Version?

Excited to go Python!

Question Ivan Tioh · Apr 11, 2017

It is possible to update Cache object property from Python using the following Python code, with import of intersys.pythonbind3:

my_object.set("my_property",["A","B","C"])

However, I am unable to save 2D %List with 2D Python array like the following:

my_object.set("my_property",[["A","B","C"],["1","2","3"]])

I am not sure whether this is Python-Cache bind flaw or design issue. Is there any alternative/ workaround to do the same for above?

Hi Developers!

This is the second post on the resources for Developers. This part is about Open Exchange

Using Open Exchange to Learn InterSystems

InterSystems Open Exchange is a applications gallery of tools, connectors, and libraries which InterSystems Developers submit to share the experience, approaches and do business. All the applications are either built with InterSystems data platforms or are intended to use for development with InterSystems data platforms.

If you are a beginner developer you can take a look at applications in Technology Example category. All the applications in this category come with open source code repositories, so you are able to run the samples and examples in a docker container with IRIS on your laptop or in the cloud IRIS sandbox. I put some data

INSERT INTO nodes (name, parent) VALUES ('n1', NULL);
INSERT INTO nodes (name, parent) VALUES ('n11', 'n1');
INSERT INTO nodes (name, parent) VALUES ('n12', 'n1');
INSERT INTO nodes (name, parent) VALUES ('n13', 'n1');

Let's delete all

DELETE FROM nodes;

Nope, no way.

Question Dmitrij Vladimirov · Nov 22, 2024

Hence the question: is there a way to do that?
The goal is to get data (from half a thousand to 3-4 thousands lines) from DB, calculate standart deviation  then use it as logical condition in analyzer.
For example IF std > custom_value = show_the_result ELSE null
There is a STDDEV(MDX) method  used in Analyzer but it is a measure and it can not be used as logical condition (correct me if i am wrong)

And there is a Embedded Python with numpy, but logic behind STDDEV(MDX) and numpy.

Question Timothy Leavitt · Mar 31, 2025

I'm exploring this right now: given a bunch of types defined as Pydantic models, how can I come up with an equivalent %RegisteredObject/%SerialObject and convert to/from (e.g., to support persistence and match validation as much as possible)?

People who know Python better than I do (e.g., your average undergraduate from this decade): is this a stupid idea or a cool idea? Has anyone else done this before?

Hey guys,
I need your help.
I am writing a code in Python and I want to create a database and some properties and then to send json files (data) to this database. (I use client-server-model for loading the data into IRIS)
I use curl methods and convert it in Python code with:

curl.trillworks.com/#python

My code so far:

url = "http://127.0.0.1:52773/api/docdb/v1/NamespaceName/db/DBName"
url2 = "http://127.0.0.1:52773/api/docdb/v1/NamespaceName/doc/DBName/"

header = {
        'Content-Type': 'application/json',
    }

response = requests.get(url, headers=header)
print(response.
