#Object Data Model

There's plenty of goodness in the %-packages InterSystems supplies, and it seems that every new version of Caché brings something new. The browser-based class documentation (a.k.a. Documatic) generally provides a good level of information, but on the basis that "a picture is worth a thousand words" I sometimes want a diagram.

For example, when trying to navigate the %Dictionary package for a project that needed to find out about class definitions, here's one of the UML class diagrams I created.

Does anyone know of a library that can be used to create Mock objects for Objectscript classes?

Right now, my team has been building mock objects by hand to help circumvent dependencies when writing and executing unit tests, but I always wondered if someone had ever created a Mock library like Mockito to help quicken the process.

Developing an idea with RuleEngine in XData, we could even refuse from editing full class and edit only valuable xml. Sometime ago I have already written an article(in russian) about such possibility, even more, in that article I wrote about compilable JavaScript to Caché.

The attached file contains an example of code generation using ObjectGenerators which builds a very simple homemade RuleEngine.

Code generation is an excellent way of increasing performance moving run-time calculations to compile-time.

We could generate code creating routines or implemeting methods using ObjectGenerators. In this example we are using ObjectGenerators.

Events_Simple

This is a very basic example that creates some worker processes and then enqueue messages to them using $system.Event.

Let's say the user need to execute some heavy code (build a report, or extensive calculations etc.). So, of course it needs to be asynchronous, and we possibly need to store some data about execution status. How?

Recently I came across a very strong statement to the effect that InterSystems.Data.CacheClient.dll library works fast because it does not open a TCP/IP connection, instead it works in the same process as a database. It made me pause for quite some time. Firstly because .Net Managed Provider, which utilises this library, opens TCP/IP connection to the database (and it is stated in the documentation "Using .NET and the ADO.NET Managed Provider with Caché"). And secondly, because as far as I know only eXtreme applications attach themselves to the process.

Class Queries in InterSystems IRIS (and Cache, Ensemble, HealthShare) is a useful tool that separates SQL queries from Object Script code. Basically, it works like this: suppose that you want to use the same SQL query with different arguments in several different places.In this case you can avoid code duplication by declaring the query body as a class query and then calling this query by name. This approach is also convenient for custom queries, in which the task of obtaining the next row is defined by a developer. Sounds interesting? Then read on!

The object and relational data models of the Caché database support three types of indexes, which are standard, bitmap, and bitslice. In addition to these three native types, developers can declare their own custom types of indexes and use them in any classes since version 2013.1. For example, iFind text indexes use that mechanism.
