Introduction

My guess is that most IRIS developers create their applications using its native ObjectScript language or, if using an external language, then most likely using either Java, Python or perhaps C++.

I suspect that only a minority have considered using JavaScript as their language of choice, which, if true, is a great shame, because, In my opinion and experience, JavaScript is the closest equivalent to ObjectScript in terms of its ability to integrate with the IRIS's underlying multi-dimensional database.

Our previous lesson ended with us serving a Message value obtained from a Caché REST service to the client, using Angular as a runtime.  While there is a lot of moving parts involved in this process, the page is not especially exciting at the moment.  Before we can start adding new features, we should take a step back and review our tools.


This tutorial is using the JSON functionality built into 2016.2+ versions of Caché.  This functionality is partially available in 2016.

This concept may be known to some, but I just found it very useful and I would like to share as it may help someone else.

If you are working with CSP or Zen you sometimes come across the need to use embedded JavaScript. Suppose you are working with some loops, which use < or > as shown in example below:

Some time ago I got a WRC case transferred where a customer asks for the availability of a raw DEFLATE compression/decompression function built-in Caché.

When we talk about DEFLATE we need to talk about Zlib as well, since Zlib is the de-facto standard free compression/decompression library developed in the mid-90s.

Zlib works on particular DEFLATE compression/decompression algorithm and the idea of encapsulation within a wrapper (gzip, zlib, etc.).

The WebSocket protocol provides a two-way channel of communication between a server and client, allowing servers to send messages to clients without first receiving a request. We finished our last lesson with our Widgets Direct page iterating over a list of widgets, displaying an ID and a Name value.  While we have been able to achieve this with only a small amount of coding, the page itself is not the most visually appealing place to be.  The AngularJS framework is providing a powerful Model-View-Controller framework for our structure and logic, but it does not implement anything that will provide a nice UI experience.  For that we need to implement a UI toolkit.

We finished our last lesson with our Widgets Direct page receiving a Welcome message as a property of a JSON object, which was unpacked and displayed on the page. However, we are on Lesson 3, and we still haven't had any talk of displaying widgets yet.  

Let's change that.  Widgets Direct are a leader in widget and widget accessories, so we clearly have numerous items to display.   To transfer this, we will need to declare and return our first array.  Let's go back to our REST.Dispatch class, and add this data to our Service.

As a result of Evgeny's recent questions regarding the use of QEWD.js with IRIS in another post, I thought it would be a good idea to create a separate post focusing specifically on how to use QEWD.js to create REST APIs for IRIS.

QEWD.js is,  of course, a Node.js framework, and all the REST API code can be written entirely in JavaScript. 

The RealWorld Conduit reference application makes a great exemplar for this kind of thing, as the APIs are all published and there are numerous implementations of both front-ends and back-ends for it, using different technologies, frameworks and databases.

IRIS provides us with anti login CSRF attack mitigation, however this is not the same as a CSRF attack, as login attacks only occur on the login form. There are currently no built-in tools to mitigate CSRF attacks on api calls and other forms, so this is a step in mitigating these attacks.

In our last lesson, we implemented a linkage to our WidgetAccessory class, and debugged some errors we encountered along the way.  We now have our data being returned by REST, but what if we want to update or add new data to our application?  

So far we have only used HTTP GET commands with our REST Services, we now have to implement PUT (which roughly corresponds to an Update) and a POST (which roughly corresponds to a Create.  Author's note: there is a lot of writing online about why this statement isn't entirely correct, I'm not going to go into the detail here).

In our last lesson, we added a relationship between 2 persistent classes.  We are clearly going to need to start creating REST Services to expose CRUD operations for each of these classes, but before we do that, we should really finish defining our linkages.  We added code to our Widget toJSON to spool off related Accessory data, so we should really do the reciprocal and allow Accessories to return all Widgets that are compatible.

The code we can use is essentially the same as we used on the Widget side.

I thought I'd share some issues I had today with Zen development in a custom component. Say we have created a Zen composite component with a few javascript methods that modify its child components. In order to modify these components, we can use something like the following method:
