If you work with Portal on multiple instances of Caché, Ensemble or HealthShare you might find it useful to set the System Mode of the various instances, so as to give yourself a visual reminder of the role of the one you're currently working on.

For instance:

Configuring an Ensemble production can be a challenging task involving a thorough understanding of the system and production functionality and a detailed understanding towards each configuration item. After successfully configured an Ensemble production, you might need to set up an identical production on the mirror environment, or deploy the production on a development system to a live system, or send a copy for diagnostic/debug purposes. A key part of Application Performance Management (APM) is recording the activity and performance of user activity. For many web applications the closest you can get to this is to record the CSP pages or CSP based services being dispatched.

Before we begin, I'd like to mention that I am by no means an Ensemble expert, so take this with a grain of salt and please feel free to offer any suggestions for improvement. That being said, I have enjoyed working with Ensemble and wanted to share the approach I took to poll an external REST API for patient data in the hopes that it might help others with a similar goal.

InterSystems IRIS OAUTH classes explained

In the previous part of our series we have learned about configuring InterSystems IRIS to act as an OAUTH client as well as authorization and authentication server (by means of OpenID Connect). In this final part of our series we are going to describe classes implementing InterSystems IRIS OAuth 2.0 framework. We will also discuss use cases for selected methods of API classes.

The API classes implementing OAuth 2.0 can be separated into three different groups according to their purpose. All classes are implemented in %SYS namespace. Some of them are public (via % package), some not and should not be called by developers directly.

Prompted by this post about accessing a global at its original location after you have changed a mapping, here's a tip about one specific dropdown in Portal that's sometimes useful.

I only recently noticed the presence of a local database named CACHE alongside the more familiar CACHESYS, CACHELIB, CACHETEMP and CACHEAUDIT.

A bit of digging through the documentation archive led me to conclude that the CACHE database arrived in 2010.2, where the release notes say:

Sometimes I observe people scrolling manually down to the bottom of the Console Log document when they want to see the most recent messages. So I want to draw attention to the handy link that does the job for you in a single click:

During startup a Caché/Ensemble/HealthShare instance must consult a parameter file to get some information it needs at the early stages of startup. By default it uses the file called cache.cpf, but by adding an extra argument to the ccontrol start command you can make it use an alternative file.

Amongst the large fonts and chunky icons of Portal's pages, the Menu button in the top left corner is easily overlooked:

I wrote "often" above because I've also noticed that the Menu contents change when I'm on a page within the Ensemble section of Portal:

User interfaces such as Portal often give us multiple ways of doing a task. Sometimes we stick with habits and don't realize that another way might save us time.
