Abstract

A global provider of mobile telecommunications software tested the performance of InterSystems Caché and Oracle as the database in a simulated data mart application. They found Caché to be 41% faster than Oracle at building a data mart. When testing the response time to SQL queries of the data mart, Caché's performance ranged from 1.8 times to 513 times faster than Oracle.

Introduction

Telecommunications companies, because they generate and must analyze enormous amounts of information, are among the most demanding database users in the world.

Advent of Code is a series of 25 small programming challenges, it's an ideal way for beginners to start learning a computer language, and for advanced people to sharpen their programming skills.

There are small and bigger puzzles, which you can solve typically in half an hour to a few hours. (Looking at the leaderboard, the top aces can do them in less than 10 minutes.)

Advent of Code is created by Eric Wastl, you can find all info on https://adventofcode.com/.

To help you get trained for this year's challenges which start at December 1st, we* will try to solve and comment the puzzles from 2016.

Announcement Francis Galiegue · Apr 18, 2016

Hello,

I hereby announce the creation of an IRC channel dedicated to Caché development:

* network: FreeNode (connect to server: irc.freenode.net)

* channel: ##cos (yes, two hashes).

Topic is anything related to Caché development in spite of the name (and the fact that of Caché development I only really know about COS anyway), so sorry in advance for the restrictive channel name :)

Waiting for you here! (my nick is idletask on freenode)

Side note: that would be a good opportunity to launch a project of an IRC bot in COS.

The following code snippet contains a class method "test" that determines the value of a specified property for an instance of its class:

/// get property value within class by indirection
Class objectscript.getPropOfThisClass Extends %RegisteredObject
{
// extra code to help test
	Property myProp as %Integer;

// need to instantiate an object to access property value
	method test() {

NewBie's Corner Session 21 Parameters  Part II

Welcome to NewBie's Corner, a weekly or biweekly post covering basic Caché Material.

Parameters

In the previous session we saw how to call RtnB from RtnA with Parameters.

We also defined Parameters as another name for Variables when used in passing data from one Routine to another, or, from one Label to another.

Calling a routine from a Label, or to a Label, from within a routine is very similar to calling a routine itself.

Question Ran Kahane · May 17, 2023

Hello,

We have recently encountered an issue which requires us to define a new identity field (named xMDA in the attached example), instead of using the default ID field.

We need to run an SQL query which unfortunately overrides the ID field (see attached image) but we still need to be able to access the ID field in said query.

We are however unable to get the attached solution to work. Is there a way to get around this issue?

Class TafnitCore.System.MDA.USER.

InterSystems FAQ rubric

It can be retrieved using the schema INFORMATION_SCHEMA.

INFORMATION_SCHEMA is a system schema and is not displayed by default in the SQL menu of the Management Portal.

The method to display it is as follows.

  1. Open Management Portal → System Explorer → SQL menu.
  2. Check "System" on the left of the schema drop-down.
  3. Select INFORMATION_SCHEMA from the schema dropdown.

The SQL to get the ID, field name (COLUMN_NAME), data type (DATA_TYPE), description (DESCRIPTION) for the specified table (Sample.Human) is as follows.

Question Peter Kopp · Jan 31, 2017

Good morning, I would like to visualize the data summarized in a tablepane in a pieChart widget. Since my tablepane has already executed the query, I would like to use the tablepane snapshot as the data source for the pieChart widget. Is this possible? What would the syntax be for linking the widget to the snapshot look like? Thank you for all input.

Hi Community,

This article assumes that you are familiar with Zabbix and SNMP monitoring, if not, there are some very interesting posts on the Community, especially this one (https://community.intersystems.com/post/creating-custom-snmp-oids) which contains a lot of information on how to configure and request an SNMP Cache server.

With Cache, all MIB data objects are organized into tables, so you need to know the index of an object to be able to get its value.

InterSystems FAQ rubric

In SQL, NULL data and the empty string ('') are different data. The method for setting and checking each is as follows.

(1) NULL data

[SQL]

insert into test(a) values(NULL)
select * from test where a IS NULL

[InterSystems ObjectScript]

set x=##class(User.test).%New()
set x.a=""

(2) Empty string ('')

[SQL]

insert into test(a) values('')
select * from test where a = ''

[InterSystems ObjectScript]

set x=##class(User.test).%New()
set x.a=$C(0)

For more information, please refer to the following documents:

Question Arpitha Ramakrishnaiah · May 11, 2017

Hi,

I would like to know if there is any code to compare and update two directories/namespaces for class files.
If file is present in directory1 and not present in diectory2, it should import the classfile.
If file is not present in directory1 and it is present in directory2, the corresponding file should be deleted from  directory2.

Please suggest code for the task.

Thanks,
Arpitha R

The Issue

I help support a legacy ZEN application that makes extensive use of the “dataGrid” component. The application reuses a ZEN page with a“dataGrid” for different views of similar data; depending on the view, the application hides or displays some of the columns of the “dataGrid”. The application does this client-side, setting the “hidden” property of the “columnDescriptor” true or false as needed.

Users have reported the following bug in the app: On views which hide a column, data in the other columns are shifted so as to appear under the wrong headers.

Hi developers!

I just want to share with you the knowledge aka experience which could save you a few hours someday.

If you are building REST API with IRIS which contains more than 1 level of "/", e.g. '/patients/all'  don't forget to add parameter 'recurse=1' into your deployment script in %Installer, otherwise all the second and higher entries won't work. And all the entries of level=1 will work.

/patients

- will work,  but

/patients/all

- won't.

Here is an example of CSPApplicatoin section which fix the issue and which you may want to use in your %Installer class:

Quotes (1NF/2NF/3NF)ru:

Every row-and-column intersection contains exactly one value from the applicable domain (and nothing else). The same value can be atomic or non-atomic depending on the purpose of this value. For example, “4286” can be
  • atomic, if its denotes “a credit card’s PIN code” (if it’s broken down or reshuffled, it is of no use any longer)
  • non-atomic, if it’s just a “sequence of numbers” (the value still makes sense if broken down into several parts or reshuffled)

This article explores the standard methods of increasing the performance of SQL queries involving the following types of fields: string, date, simple list (in the $LB format), "list of <...>" and "array of <...>".

Now available on Open Exchange is a library of third party charts available to use within DeepSee/InterSystems IRIS BI dashboards. To start, simply download and install, select the new portlet as the widget type, then select the chart type that you desire. If you don't find the type of chart you are looking for, you can easily extend the portlet to implement your desired chart type. These new chart types can be used within existing dashboards or you can create new dashboards using them.

Introduction

With the maturation and wide acceptance of Java, object-oriented programming has moved to the foreground of the application development landscape. Because of their rich data models and support for productivity-enhancing concepts such as encapsulation, inheritance, and polymorphism, object technologies like Java, C++, and COM, are favored by today's application developers.

However, much of the world's data still resides in relational databases.

Today's challenge is a variation on the White Elephant gift exchange (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/White_elephant_gift_exchange), in this case, by a bunch of Elves where only one can have all gifts.

Each Elf brings a present. They all sit in a circle, numbered starting with position 1. Then, starting with the first Elf, they take turns stealing all the presents from the Elf to their left.

Task: Run SQL queries quickly on huge amounts of data
Approach: Use a shared-nothing architecture to leverage a cluster of small, cost-effective servers

Explains how a shared nothing architecture allows you to leverage a cluster of small, costeffective servers to serve query results that would have taken much longer on a single, big and expensive box. This brings affordable horizontal scalability.

The latest release of Serenji focuses on the debug experience. Not only can you now debug on the spot, no matter where you are or what you're doing, but we've also added some smaller features that will make debugging more straightforward.

  • Run and Debug CodeLenses - clickable links above each class method, procedure, subroutine or extrinsic function.
  • Intuitive prompting for entrypoints and arguments - when debugging a class method, produce, subroutine or extrinsic function.
  • Shaded read-only background - to clearly differentiate between documents which are editable and those that are read-only.
  • Program output in debug console - output is shown in the debug console.
  • Serenji commands on Server Manager's namespace trees - allowing you to launch Serenji through Server Manager.
